Forensic Science (6th – 8th)

The Middle School Forensic Science course brings science to life by immersing students in the role of real forensic investigators. Through engaging, hands-on labs spanning life, physical, and earth science, students learn to observe carefully, organize and record data, think critically, and conduct simple tests to solve simulated crimes—including theft, dog-napping, vandalism, and water pollution. This curriculum is an ideal vehicle for teaching the nature of science as well as foundational science concepts.

Course Overview:

  • Hands-On Forensic Labs:
Students work through detailed lab investigations that include complete background information, step-by-step procedures, and reproducible student worksheets. Each lab reinforces core science principles while developing real-world investigative skills.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving:
Like real-life forensic scientists, students learn to analyze evidence, form hypotheses, and draw conclusions. Crime-based scenarios provide a motivating context that makes science relevant and exciting.
  • Structured Assessments:
Regular assessments include lab reports, worksheets, focused tests, and quarterly reviews to monitor progress and reinforce learning across life, physical, and earth science topics.
  • Supportive Instruction:
Opportunities for virtual discussions and problem-solving sessions with the instructor are available, providing personalized support when students request additional help.
  • Preparation and Participation:
Students are encouraged to prepare questions prior to classes to enhance understanding and participation during live discussions.
