Board Game Design (6th – 8th)

The Board Game Design course challenges students to shift their perspective from "player" to "designer." Rather than seeing games as code or art assets, students will learn to understand games as experiences delivered through the interaction of mechanics, storytelling, aesthetics, and technology. Using "The Art of Game Design" by Jesse Schell as the spine of the course, students will explore the principles behind what makes games engaging, balanced, and fun—then apply those principles to create their own original board game.

Course Overview:

  • Design-Centered Learning:
Students will study core game design concepts including mechanics, dynamics, theme integration, player experience, and iterative playtesting. Each lesson builds toward a deeper understanding of how great games are crafted from the ground up.
  • Hands-On Prototyping:
Throughout the year, students will brainstorm, prototype, playtest, and refine their own original board game. This iterative design process mirrors how professional designers develop real-world products.
  • Critical Analysis:
Students will analyze existing games through the lens of a designer, identifying how mechanics, narrative, and aesthetics work together to create compelling player experiences.
  • Final Project Presentation:
Each student will present a completed, newly designed board game as their final project at the end of the year, showcasing their design skills and creative vision.
  • Supportive Instruction:
Opportunities for virtual discussions and design feedback sessions with the instructor are available, providing personalized support as students develop their projects.
