The Hobbit (9th-12th) - (put in Study Guide / Material Fee)

In The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien tells the story of Mr. Bilbo Baggins and his unexpected and rather uncomfortable adventure over the edge of the Wild. This engaging literature class for middle-grade students will explore timeless themes, vocabulary, and character development found in Tolkien’s beloved classic. Students will complete literary activities from Progeny Press and engage in enriching in-class projects, vocabulary study, and literary analysis.

Course Overview:

  • Literary Analysis:
    Explore characterization, metaphors, heroic quests, and moral themes through guided reading and discussion.
  • Vocabulary and Comprehension:
    Study words in context and practice using literary vocabulary in writing and conversation.
  • Interactive Enrichment:
    Engage in projects such as mapwork, character studies, Middle-Earth dioramas, drama, and creative writing.
  • Thematic Exploration:
    Discuss Biblical values and character traits like courage, responsibility, and mercy reflected in the story.
  • Creative Fun:
    We’ll enhance our literary journey by watching the film adaptation and enjoying a themed Hobbit food day!
