Literary Eras through the Ages (9th – 12th)

This high school literature course takes students on a chronological journey through the major literary movements, from Classical literature to Postmodernism. As students read selections from some of history’s greatest authors, they will discover how historical events, cultural shifts, and changing worldviews shaped the themes, styles, and ideas found in literature. From the epic poetry of Homer and the plays of Shakespeare to the novels of the Brontë sisters, the fiction of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and the thought-provoking works of Franz Kafka, students will explore how literature has both reflected and influenced civilization throughout history.

Course Overview:

  • Explore Literary History:
Trace the development of literature through the major literary movements, learning how each era built upon—or reacted against—the ideas that came before it.
  • Read Great Works:
Encounter a diverse collection of classic literature from authors such as Homer, Shakespeare, the Brontë sisters, Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Franz Kafka, and others through selected readings provided in class.
  • Develop Critical Thinking:
Analyze characters, themes, symbolism, and literary techniques while evaluating each work through a Biblical worldview. Students will participate in discussions, written reflections, essays, and other engaging activities.
  • Ask the Big Questions:
Throughout the year, students will wrestle with one central question: What makes a literary work truly great? By examining timeless themes, artistic excellence, and cultural influence, students will refine their understanding of why certain works continue to endure across generations.
  • Strengthen Reading & Writing Skills:
Students will build confidence in literary analysis, thoughtful discussion, analytical writing, and close reading while maintaining a personal literary journal throughout the course.
